Overview of York

York is a city in North Yorkshire and is 49 miles from Teeside Airport, the journey normally takes about an hour in normal traffic conditions. York has a population of 137505 according to the 2001 census and was founded by the Romans in 71AD. Originally built where the River Foss meets the River Ouse the remains have been unearthed of the original fortress and walls. The Romans named it Eboracum, the Anglo Saxons named it Eoforwic and the vikings after them called it Jorvik, gradually becoming the name York.

The city has alot to offer with attractions and things to do, both modern and historic. Being an ancient town visitors have many places to go to find out about its heritage. There are historic houses, Castles, Museums, Galleries and Gardens. A few of these are Yorkshire Museum, York Dungeon, York Minster, National Railway Museum, York Castle Museum, Cliffords Tower and Yorvik Viking Centre. There are guided walks, open top buses and boat trips available which are excellent ways to see the sights of York city or the countryside. York Minster is the largest Medieval Gothic Cathedral north of the Alps, the Centre Tower being a top tourist attraction offering breathtaking views of the Vale of York. Outdoor activities could include The walk around the walls of the city,a day at York Racecourse or a riverside walk.

Other attractions include The Micklegate Bar-Yorks 12th Century southgate, Merchant Adventurers Hall, York city art gallery and Fairfax House built in the 17th Century. Whilst taking a stroll you could catch the Street theatre demonstrations held in Kings Square and Parliament street with Jugglers and Musicians entertaining the crowds. For classical music, theatre and opera there is the York theatre Royal,The National Centre for Early Music and the Grand Opera House.

There are many places to shop in York with Independant, art/craft shops, Food stores, clothing and Antique shops. In Market Square the Newgate Market is held and also the farmers market selling local produce in the city centre. One of the most popular places to go for historic talks, Ghost walks, shopping or for a meal is The Shambles. It is Yorks oldest street and its ancient buildings lean in from either side and also marks the beginning of the Ghost Hunt storytelling.
