Overview of Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton is a city and Borough in the West Midlands and is 26 miles from Birmingham Airport, this journey should take about half an hour in normal traffic conditions. Wolverhampton grew from a small market town specialising in the woollen trade. It is named after Lady Wulfruna who founded it in 985 and a statue of her now stands at the steps of St Peter's Church. Neighbouring towns are Walsall and Dudley and it has a populaton of 236582 according the the 2001 Census.
Situated near the beautiful countryside of Shropshire and Staffordshire, Wolverhampton is part of the region known as The Black Country given this name due to soot pollution caused by heavy industrialisation of the late 19th Century. It has a number of parks such as East Park, West Park and Hickman Park originally created for the factory workers and are still popular visitor attractions today. With various activities such as boating, play areas and cafes at each one. Shopping facilities are excellent in Wolverhampton with two indoor shopping centres with main stream and Independant shops with a city centre pedestrianised for shoppers. Wolverhampton indoor and outdoor markets date back to 13th century and Bilston market is considered to be the best market in the Black Country. Other markets to try are Wednesfield Market and the monthly famers market. There are a number of historic churches and buildings to visit such as Moseley Old Hall with its Knot Garden, Wightwick Manor, Bantock House and Park.
To appreciate Wolverhamptons history and architecture there a number of trails to follow on foot that cover the main places of interest. Along with the Wolverhampton City Trail and Wolverhampton Urban Village there are others for the surrounding areas available. The nightlife in Wolverhampton is renowned with thousands of people regularly filling the many clubs, pubs, bars, Theatres and concert venues. There is a large student population from Wolverhampton University which contributes to the thriving nightlife. There are a number of health and leisure centres in and around the city with the famous Wolf Mountain climbing centre and many golf courses to choose from.
There are other nearby places to visit such as Ironbridge Gorge, Bridgnorth and Moseley Village. with Birmingham city centre only 17 miles away and neighbouring towns such as Telford, Shrewsbury and Stafford there are plenty of options for trips further afield.
