Overview of Tenterden
The town of Tenterden is located East of Gatwick airport a distance of 57 miles that would take around 1 hour 5 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A21. Tenterden is a Cinque Port town in the county of Kent. It stands on the edge of the Weald, overlooking the valley of the River Rother.
Before the great storms of the 15th century silted up the River Rother, Tenterden was linked to the sea and became an important ship building centre and trading port. Much of the town's heritage remains today, including many historic timber framed buildings, a medieval church, cobbled alleys and the Georgian Town Hall. William Caxton, who in 1477 printed the first English book, was said to have been born here. Keeping guard over the town is the pinnacled tower of St. Mildred's Church, which dates from the 12th Century, from where once the signal beacon warned of the approach of the Spanish Armada, and where later Lord Nelson's daughter, Horatia was the wife of the vicar. The town has escaped much of the major development now commonplace elsewhere, and remains one of the most picturesque in Kent. Its broad tree-lined High Street offers a selection of shopping facilities.
One of the best ways to enjoy the town is to follow the Heritage Trail that takes in the museums, the historic churches, the Elizabethan, Georgian and Victorian buildings and Town Hall. The town is also home to The Kent and East Sussex Railway where you can climb aboard one of its beautifully restored carriages and enjoy a trip through the picturesque Rother Valley to Bodiam Castle. Also located nearby are a wonderful collection of historic houses, gardens and vineyards including Sissinghurst Castle, Smallhythe Place, Biddenden Vineyards and Chapel Down Winery.
