The Gower Panninsula that surrounds Swansea is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with areas including Limestone cliffs, Salt Marshes and dunes, Sandy beaches and sandstone heaths. These attract many touists and walkers every year. The traditional local fare includes freask cockles and laverbread, with Lamb reared on the nearby salt marshes.

Swansea is the site for the University of Swansea, where the engineering department is considered a centre of excellence.
