Overview of Southwark

The London Borough of Southwark is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 39 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the M11. It is located in Southeast London and forms part of inner London, it has a population of 288,700 according to 2011 statistics.

The borough is situated opposite the City of London on the South bank of the River Thames and Tower Bridge, the Millennium Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, Southwark Bridge and London Bridge all connect across from the borough to the City. It is known to be one of the oldest areas in London as the ancient town of Southwark was where the Roman footbridge crossed to London and many excavations have unearthed artefacts from wealthy houses that used to stand there. The area became comprised of agricultural rural villages before becoming a centre for industry and commerce in the middle to late 19th Century with Bermondsey being known for its leather tanning and Rotherhithe for seafaring and ship building industries.

Today the area is popular with young professionals due to the cheaper house prices and close proximity to the City and is an important tourist location due to the number of sites and landmarks located there. Some of these include Shakespeares Globe Theatre, the Rose Theatre, the Tate Modern Art Gallery, Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market. It is also a centre for learning with institutions such as Alleyn's School and Dulwich College located within its boundaries, it also has many literary associations with Charles Dickens having used the old borough as a setting in some of his novels and the site of the Tabard Inn featuring in Chaucers Canterbury Tales.
