Overview of Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury is a town in Shropshire near the welsh border and is 65 miles south of Manchester airport. This journey should take 1 hour and 20 minutes by taxi in normal traffic conditions. Shrewsbury is surrounded by beautiful countryside such as the Shropshire hills a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is near the welsh mountains. It has a populaton of 95850 according the the 2001 Census.
Shrewsbury is an attractive medieval market town with impressive black and white houses lining the streets. It is steeped in history with many listed buildings and has been called 'England's finest Tudor Town' it was also the birthplace of Charles Darwin. The Battle of Shrewsbury is remembered as one of the bloodiest battles in Britain with thousands dying in only a few hours. Historic buildings include Shrewsbury castle originally built in 1070 and restored during the reign of Edward I, then again in 1790. Today it is the Shropshire regimental museum. Amongst other historic buildings Shrewsbury Abbey is a popular tourist attraction with Quarry Park. The Town Square has the historic Market Hall now used as a small cinema and cafe and the nearby Music Hall hosting music and entertainment. Shrewsbury has everything needed for shopping with plenty of high street retail shops, independant shops, malls and shopping centres. There are lots of cafes and pubs to stop at and a superb choice of restaurants for an evening meal. The town comes alive at night with street theatre and live music.
Activities include guided tours of the town giving an insight into the history and famous people associated with the town and has a closer look at the towns medieval street layout with interlinking streets, narrow alleyways, passages and Shuts. Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Attingham Park stately home and St Chad's Church are main attractions. Depending on the time of year there are a number of events and festivals held such as Shrewsbury Folk Festival,Shrewsbury International Street Theatre Festival, Shrewsbury Summer Season, Heritage celebrations and Shrewsbury Flower Show. For a good day out Wroxeter Roman City has the remains of the 2nd largest roman city in Britain or go for a Cruise along the Severn River in the pleasure cruise boat Sabrina.
Some of Shropshire's most beautiful towns to visit outside of Shrewsbury to visit are Oswestry, Much Wenlock, Ironbridge and Bridgnorth.
