Overview of Poole

The town of Poole is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 120 miles that would take around 2 hours 10 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M3. It is situated in the County of Dorset on the South coast and has a population of 142,100 according to 2010 statistics.

The town was a settlement before the Iron Age, and its name comes from the Celtic word Bol meaning place near a pool or creek. The Romans landed at Poole during their conquest of Britain and took over the Iron Age settlement at Hanworthy which stands west of the current town centre. In Anglo-Saxon times it was used as a base for fishing and a place to anchor for ships on the way to Wareham. After the Norman Conquest Poole grew into a busy Port and in 1433 King Henry VI awarded it staple port status. In the 18th Century it established trade with North American Colonies that lasted until the early 19th Century.

There are many interesting things to see and do in Poole the foremost being the Harbour that is the second largest natural Harbour in the world, the Quay, Poole Pottery and the Beaches are the most popular tourist attractions. The main shopping centre and largest in Dorset is The Dolphin shopping centre and the pedestrianised shopping centre contains shops, bars, cafes, restaurants and pubs.
