Oxford is boarded by two rivers, the Cherwell and the Thames, these meet to the south of the city. Around Oxfordshire the Thames is also known as, The Isis.

Oxford is home to Oxford University. The oldest University in the English speaking world. The poet Matthew Arnold described Oxford as, the "City of gleaming spires," this is after the architectural stylings of the University buildings.

In 1840 the great Western Railway and the london north Western Railway, linked Oxford with the capital. In the 1920's Oxford established itself as a center for publishing and printing, and this is reflected today in the vast number of book shops.

On may 6, 1954, Roger bannister, an ex student of Oxford university, was the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes. This event took place at the Iffey road track.
