An overview of Newport

Famous as the home of satiricle rappers Goldie Lookin' Chain, Newport is situated on the River Usk. The original Port and settlement was further up the Usk, but as ships increased in size they were no longer able to navigate the channal, and so a new settlement was created at the river mouth.

Newport found prosperity as a dock site in the Industrial Revolution, when iron and coal were brought down the river from the South Wales coalfields.

Newport was made a city in 2002 to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee. It has started a period of urban regeneration, with millions of pounds being ploughed into the area. Plans for redevelopment of two new shopping centers, housing and a new water frount had all been planned. However, due to delays it seems unlikely that the ambitious plans will be completed in time for the 2010 Ryder Cup Golf Tournament that will be taking place in the City.

The Ryder Cup will be held at the Celtic Manour Resort, a five star conference and golf centre, close to the City.

Other sporting events that take place in Newport each year are: The Welsh Open European Tour for golf, the World Cup for Pool and the Welsh Open World Ranking Snooker Tournament.

Newport is also home to the University of Wales, Newport. And has a large and viberant student community.
