Overview of Minehead

Minehead is a coastal town in Somerset and only 52 miles from Bristol airport. This journey should take about 1 hour and 20 minutes by taxi in normal traffic conditions. From Bristol airport a direct route into Minehead would be via Bridgwater. From Minehead harbour excellent views can be seen over the Bristol Channel over to Wales, and next to Minehead is the beautiful Exmoor National Park. It has a population of 11699 according to the 2001 Census.

The town was first called 'Mynedd' meaning hill in Welsh, and it used to trade in mainly cattle, sheep, wool, butter, fish and coal with the welsh communities via the Port. The town also marks the beginning of Britains longest National Trail the South West Coast Path running all the way to Poole, Dorset. It has a long stretch of beach and promenade with amusements, cafes and takeaways and has been made popular by the Butlins Holiday Resort nearby. Overlooking the town is St Michael's Church on North Hill and the views from there allow you to see over the town to Exmoor and the Sea. The historic harbour has pleasure steamers providing afternoon or evening cruises and there is a seafront railway station to take a steam train ride along the coast. Attractions include Blenheim Gardens, a beautiful park that holds concerts in the summer months. With a Cinema, leisure centre, Regal Theatre, Pubs and Inns, there is alot of choices of entertainment for the day and evening. From the beautiful thatched cottages in Quay Street to the town centre with its many Shops, Town Hall, Cafes and craft/gift shops there is much to see and do.

Minehead is a good base for exploring Exmoor, to see its beautiful landscapes, Marshland, Woodlands, ponies, red deer and its many historical and quaint parishes. The town of Dunster is popular with tourists for its fortified 11th century castle and attractive village shops and houses. Also along the coast is the town of Watchet with its lovely Harbour, Museums and gift shops.
