Overview of Mildenhall

The town of Mildenhall is located North of Stansted Airport a distance of around 46 miles a journey that would take around 55 minutes by taxi via the M11. It is located in Suffolk and has a population of 9,906 according to the 2001 census.

Mildenhall is a medieval market town and its history can be traced back to Anglo Saxon times. During Roman occupation they had a ring of farmsteads around the fen edge and the Roman Hoard known as the Mildenhall tresure consisting of silver objects was recovered in 1943, now dispayed in the British Museum. It used to belong to the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds with the Abbot having control over the entire area, but with the dissolution of the Monastaries ownership went to the Crown. Situated in the town today is RAF Mildenhall and the airbase currently has the highest concentration of American residents in the country.

There are a number of attractions for visitors to the town including Mildenhall Museum that gives the history of the airbase, local history and wildlife, weekly town market and good transport links to the neighbouring towns of Brandon, Bury St. Edmunds, Newmarket and Thetford.
