Overview of Merton

The London Borough of Merton is located Southeast of Heathrow airport a distance of 32 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A3. It is an outer London borough in southwest London and has a population of 200,500 according to 2011 statistics.

The name Mertone (Merton), meaning Farmstead by the Pool, was first recorded in ad 967. Merton is part of the historic county of Surrey and is located south of Wandsworth and it includes such areas and historic villages as Wimbledon, Merton, Raynes Park, Morden, Mitcham, St. Helier (in part) and North Cheam. Its history can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon times and remains of a Roman Road have been excavated in Morden. The parish was under the control of Westminster Abbey until the dissolution of the Monestaries and Wimbledon was owned by the archbishop of Canterbury. Some of the areas most historical buildings include Wimbledons Old Rectory of the 16th Century, Eagle House and the Rose and Crown public house date back to the 17th century.

There is a large percentage of the area that is designated as public open space including Morden Park and Mitcham, Cannon Hill, and Wimbledon commons. It is the only borough which has tube, rail and tram services and has excellent connections into central London.
