Overview of Loughborough
Loughborough is a town in the Borough of Charnwood in the county of Leicestershire and is 8 miles southeast of Eastmidlands airport. This journey should take about 15 minutes by taxi in normal traffic conditions. Loughborough is between Leicester and Derby and is surrounded by beautiful Leicestershire countryside. It has a populaton of 91260 according the the 2001 Census.
Loughborough is known for Bells, Steam Trains and its famous University. The Bell foundry was moved to the town in 1858 by owner John Taylor and many famous bells have been made there including that of St Pauls Cathedral. The Parish Church of All Saints dating from the 14th century has 10 bells one of which is dedicated to the Taylor family. You can visit the Bellfoundry Museum to learn more about bell making and its past. The Great Central Railway is the UK's only double tracked, main line steam railway with the trains passing each other on the tracks as they did in the past. You can enjoy a meal whilst travelling through the amazing countryside and take in the scenery. Dating back from 1909 Loughborough University is one of the UK's most popular universities and has acclaimed sporting acheivements, teaching standards and impressive campus.
In the town centre is a statue of the 'Sock Man' representing Loughboroughs past and textile industry. Twice weekly the market is held in Market Place and for 3 days in November Loughborough Street Fair takes place. The Town Hall is situated in this area and provides a great choice of entertainment such as Comedy, Dance, Music, Theatre, Fairs, Events and has a Restaurant/Bar. Queens Park is at the centre and has the Carillon Tower memorial in the middle, dedicated to the men of Loughborough who died in the first world war. The park itself is a large open space perfect for a stroll. Charnwood Museum is also set in the park and exhibits books, natural, social and architectural history of the area. Famous people from Loughborough include Thomas Cook, Ben Challenger, Robert Bakewell and is where Ladybird books originated.
The beautiful woodland gardens of Whatton Gardens has many horticultural attractions to see within its fifteen acres and Beacon Hill Country Park is part of Charnwood forest an excellent place to go walking. There are many shops to visit in Loughborough, including Carillon Shopping centre, The Rushes having many high street names is excellent for fashion. The town has many places to eat, with restaurants of traditional and global cuisine and a good selection of cafes, bars and pubs. With the number of students in the town in term time there is a variety of nightclubs and bars for night time entertainment.
