Overview of London

London is located Southwest of Stansted Airport a distance of around 39 miles a journey that would take around 55 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M11. It is located on the River Thames and is a leading global city with a diverse range of peoples and cultures having a population of 8,173,194 according to 2006 statistics.

The settlement was founded by the Romans in 43AD and was called Londinium which superseded Colchester as the capital of the Roman province of Britannia in 100. The Anglo Saxons came after the Romans and developed their settlement a mile away near Covent Garden, which was moved back to the Roman location later by the Vikings. By the 10th Century it had become the largest city and important trading and political centre and when Edward the Confessor came to power in the 11th century Westminster became a venue for the business of national government. During the Tudor period much of London passed from Church to private ownership. The population of the city increased and problems rose through overpopulation including the Great Plague, street Crime and lack of housing. With the Great Fire of London destroying the many wooden buildings with rebuilding that took over ten years.

London is a major city and tourist destination for visitors from all over the world having diverse styles of architecture from many ages, historical sites, landmarks, Royal residences, parks, shops and Museums. Some major tourist attractions include the Natural History Museum, the London Eye, Tower of London, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Modern. For Leisure and Entertainment the best known locations are Leicester Square, Covent Garden and Islington.
