Overview of Liverpool

Liverpool- European Capital of Culture 2008

Liverpool city centre is located 35miles west of Manchester Airport. This journey will take approximately 45 minutes by car and is accessed via two motorways the M56 and the M62. Liverpool is one of the UK's main ports and has excellent links to Ireland, as well as the beautiful Isle of Man. The census of 2001 recorded the population at 439,473 individuals.

The History of Liverpool

Liverpool started out as a small fishing port on the shores of the Mersey river. Its name comes from the olde english for "muddy pool", probably owing to the silt accumulation around the Mersey estury. The port and town were officially founded in the 13th century, when the King made his first visit to it. During the Civil war, which began in 1642, Liverpool was, at various times, a stronghold for both the Royalists and Parlimentarians. The Royalists held the town till 1644, when they lost the battle of Marsten Moor, and subsequently all the northern part of Britain. The City owes much of its wealth and properity to the slave trade. It became Britains 3rd largest port, behind Bristol and London. Bristol of course, also having slave trade links. It finally became a city in 1880. As it was a main center for trade and industry, Liverpool suffered greatly in World War 2, when it was heavily bombed in the hope of inhibiting the war effort. 10,00 houses were destroyed and its two main churches were damaged. In fact, if you visit today, at the top of Bold Street you can see a famous local landmark, simply and affectionately called "the bombed out church". Liverpool won the place of European Capital of Culture for 2008. This has been marked by many spectacular events, encompassing all forms of culture. In September, a 12ft sculpture of a spider was slowly moved around the city by six men with long poles, before coming to rest in the buissness district on a vast web.

Famous faces

Liverpool has a diverse cultural mixture. Its exports include:- Cilla Black, The WAG phenomenon, Liverpool and Everton football clubs, the Superlambanana,Atomic Kitten and most famously The Beatles. Beatles fans are drawn to Matthew's Street from all over the world, to pay homage to thier heros at the infamous Cavern club. This is well worth a visit while your in town, and every night of the week there is live music and events. The newly-opened Hard Days night Hotel, just off the Carvern Quarter is also a must for any budding musical legends. Matthew's Street is also a mecca for party goers, with its biggest celebration, The Matthew's Street Carnival held on the last weekend of august every year.

Sight seeing

Liverpool has many fantastic shops, from the retro havern of bold street, to the more commercial Church street, There will be something for everyone. As part of the rejuvination of the city center, Liverpool one opened in May 2008. This new complex boasts 160 high street shops, restaurants and a 5 acre park, overlooking the Royal Albert Dock. Alternately, you could follow in the footsteps of Coleen et al and visit the uber trendy Cavern Walks shopping boutique, which has designers like Drome, Juicy Couture and (wag favorite) cricket. If you take a short walk from the center to The Royal Albert Dock, you can visit the Tate modern Gallery. This has been home to some UK first's, in the art world. Most recently the work of Gustav Klimt was displayed. Also on the docks is the O2 areana, this is the home to all of Liverpool's major music gigs, and will be shortly welcoming Sir Elton John on this Red Piano Tour. The docks also houses many excellent hotels, including The Jury's Inn, Express by Holiday Inn and the Premier travel Inn, all of which have various special offers on during the week.

Another important local landmark is the Superlambanana. Origonally it was designed to mark the Tate Liverpool's 10th Birthday in 1998, this massive bright yellow concrete 17 ft half lamb, half banana, divided public opinion. But soon, the friendly scousers took him to thier hearts and he is now a local hero. So much so, that for the Capital of Culture Celebrations, 100 mini lambanana's were commissioned, and schools and individuals decorated them. The were then placed around the city for 10 weeks, before being auctioned for charity. The origonal can be found now at John Moores University.

The beautiful game

Liverpool hyas two rival football clubs, Liverpool (the reds), and Everton (the blues). Liverpool play from Anfield stadium, which is 3 miles north of the city center, while Everton's Goodison Park stadium is 3 miles from the center to the west. Both has excellent access from the center via taxi from Liverpool Lime street station, or from Victoria Street bus station.
