Overview of Leicester
The town of Leicester is located Northwest of Stansted Airport a distance of around 98 miles a journey that would take around two hours by taxi via the M11 and A14. It is the county town of Leicestershire and has a population of 329,600 according to 2011 statistics.
Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England with a history dating back over 2000 years. During Roman times it was called Ratae Corieltauvorum and was an important trading centre and one of the largest towns in Roman Britain. The name Leicester comes from castra (camp) of the Ligore, meaning dwellers on the 'River Legro' and evolved into Ledecestre as later recorded in the Domesday Book. During Medieval times it had become a place of importance and local industries were wool and leather making, and the market attracted buyers and sellers from all over the Midlands. With the arrival of the Industrial Revolution the city was transformed with the Soar Canal providing transport for coal and iron.
