Overview of Worcester

The town of Worcester is located Northwest of Heathrow airport a distance of 123 miles that would take around 2 hours via the M40 and M42. It is situated in Worcestershire in the West Midlands and has a population of approx 98,800 according to 2011 statistics.

The history of the town as a settlement can be traced back to the Neolithic times that was founded on the banks of the River Severn in around 400 BC. During Roman occupation it was a trading and manufacturing centre for 300 years, when the Saxons came they named it 'Weorgoran Ceaster' which meant 'settlement of the people by the winding river'. During Medieval times the manufacturing of cloth had become a large local industry which was later replaced by Glove making in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1651 it became the location of the Battle or Worcester when Charles II tried to forcefully regain the crown.

There are many attractions in Worcester such as Worcester Cathedral, Fort Royal Park, Perry Wood, Nunnery Wood, Guildhall, The County Musem at Hartlebury Castle, Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum and the Commandery. There are many open spaces and woodlands to walk amongst such as Cripplegate Park, Gheluvelt Park and the Worcester Woods Country Park.
