Overview of Witney

The town of Witney is located Northwest of Heathrow airport a distance of 57 miles that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the M40 and A40. It is situated on the River Windrush in Oxfordshire and has a population of 22,765 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town can be traced back to both Iron Age and Roman Settlements and it was first recorded in AD 969. The name of Witney means 'Witta's Island'. Witney had two mills for grinding corn but later a cloth mill was established and by the end of the Middle Ages the town was well known for its production of Blankets and for its busy Market, blanket making continued up until 2002. In 1711 when the Weavers of the town had formed a Guild they were granted a charter buy Queen Anne, they then went on to build the blanket hall in the high street where they would measure and weigh them to ensure quality.

There are many places of interest to visit in Witney including the popular Buttercross, Cogges Manor Farm Museum, The Witney and District Museum, Wychwood Brewery, Bishops Palace, Witney Lake and Meadows and Blenheim Palace. Other attractions include North Leigh Roman Villa, Witney Farmers Market and Fritillary Sunday.
