Overview of Southampton

The town of Southampton is located Southwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 66 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M25, M3 and A33. It is situated in Hampshire and has a population of 239,700 according to 2010 Statistics.

The towns name is derived from Hamwic which was Saxon in origin and it gradually evolved into Hampton. Following the Norman conquest in 1066, Southampton became a major Port of transit between England and Normandy and by the 13th Century it was involved in the import of French Wine in exchange for english cloth and wool. During the Middle Ages, Shipbuilding became an important industry in the town and in 1740 it became a Spa Town, and at West Quay buildings were created that were filled and emptied by the flow of the tide. When the Railway link was completed in May 1840 it became known as The Gateway to the Empire.
