Overview of Henley
The town of Henley-on-Thames is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 24 miles that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the M4 and A40. It is situated on the River Thames in South Oxfordshire, nearest towns are Reading, Maidenhead and High Wycombe. It has a population of 10,646 according to the 2001 Census.
The towns history is recorded from the time of 1179 when King Henry II had purchased land for making buildings and by the 13th century a church, Bridge, Chapel and street plan had been establised. By the beginning of the 16th Century the town expanded along the West bank of the Thames and in 1786 Henley Bridge was built which remains one of the most notable landmarks of the town along with The Church of St Mary and The Old Bell pub that is dated back to 1325 making it the oldest building in the town.
Today the town is well known for its rowing, every summer the Henley Royal Regatta is held at 'Henley Reach' the stretch of river that is naturally straight and has many other rowing races held there for the local rowing clubs and teams. There are many places of interest to go for visitors to Henley such as Greys Court a tudor style house, Mapledurham House and Watermill, Stonor Park in the Chiltern Hills, Cliveden and the River and Rowing Museum.
