Overview of Grimsby

The town of Grimsby is located North of Heathrow Airport a distance of 190 miles that would take around 3.5 hours by taxi via the M25 and A1. It is a Seaport on the Humber Estuary in Lincolnshire and has a population of 87,574 according to the 2001 Census.

The towns name is said to originate from the founder of the town called Grim who was a fisherman, and 'By' means village in old norse. By the 12th Century it was a busy fishing and trading Port. From the 15th to late 18th Century the town went into decline due to the River Haven, which the town stands on silting up and preventing ships in the Humber from Docking. In the early 19th Century the town prospered once more as the Port was re-established after vast improvements with new docks being built to accomodate the subsequent boom in trade of iron, wheat, timber, hemp and flax. The fishing trawling industry also improved and continued after the establishment of the railway which enabled Grimsby Fish to be transported more quickly and gained in popularity. After its peak in the 1950s the trawling industry in the town began to decline with the eventual emergence of new industrys such as food packaging and processing.

The town has many things to do in Shopping, entertainment and historical attractions. Freshney Place Shopping Centre and Grimsby Top Town Market are excellent places for Retail enthusiasts. The National Fishing Heritage Centre and Humber Estuary Discovery Centre have information on Grimsbys Maritime History.
