Overview of Dunstable

The town of Dunstable is located North of Heathrow Airport a distance of 40 miles taking around 45 minutes by taxi via the M25, M1, A6. It is situated in Bedfordshire and nearest towns are Luton, Leighton Buzzard and Hitchin. It has a population of 35000 according to the 2001 Census. Its name is thought to have been derived from the meaning 'Dunum, or Dun a hill, and Staple, a marketplace'.

The history can be traced back to the Iron Age, Bronze Age, Roman times and the Saxons. The prehistoric sites are located in Houghton Regis, Midenbower and Sewell. The town is situated at the crossroads of two of Britains Oldest Roads Watling Street and Icknield Way. The towns Priory Church played an important role in the divorce of King Henry VIII to Catherine of Aragon. In the 17th Century the towns popularity centred around the many pubs and Inns that existed and served the many travellers going through the town to London.

There are many places of interest and things to do when staying in Dunstable such as Priory House Heritage Centre, The Grove Theatre, Quadrant Shopping Centre, Eleanor's Cross Shopping Precinct and Dunstable Downs. Things to do in the surrounding areas are Wauluds Bank a prehistoric Henge, Luton Museum and Art Gallery, Whipsnade Zoo and Totternhoe Knolls motte and bailey Castle.
