The London Borough of Croydon is located Southeast of Heathrow airport a distance of 40 miles that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the A4 and A240. It is situated within the London Borough of Croydon and is 9.5 miles South of Charing Cross. It has a population of 342700 according to 2005 statistics.

The towns history can be traced back to Norman times where it was a small settlement and went on to expand as a market town in the middle ages with the establishment of the railway later making it into a commuter town for the Victorian Middle Classes travelling into London. It was a central part of the large estates of the Archbishops of Canterbury and the church and manor house that were located in the Old Town were used for residential purposes and for entertaining monarchs and other dignitaries such as Thomas Becket, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The building is still standing today over 1000 years old and is open to visitors. Croydon is known today as the second most popular place to shop besides London with its famed Whitgift Shopping Centre and Centrale. There are many buildings and places to visit if you want to take a break from shopping such as Addington Palace a grade II Georgian Mansion, Croydon Airport Visitor Centre, Croydon Parish Church of St John the Baptist, St Marys Addington and Shirley Windmill.

The town has much to offer in the way of Arts with The Fairfield Halls that have seen the likes of The Beatles, Chuck Berry and Johnny Cash through its doors, The Warehouse Theatre known for comedy and for showcasing new writing, The Croydon Clocktower a modern library and the David Lean Cinema performance venue and town museum. It has had notable literay residents over the ages including, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, D.H Lawrence and Cicely Mary Barker Author of the Flower Fairies books.
