Overview of Crewkerne
The town of Crewkerne is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 125 miles a journey that would take around 2 hours 15 minutes by taxi via the M3 and A303. It is situated in Somerset and is close to the border of Dorest, nearest towns are Yeovil, Taunton and Frome. It has a population of 6,728 according to the 2001 Census. The name is thought to have been derived from Cruc-aera.
The town can be traced back to Alfred the Great, King Harold and William the Conquerer who all held it and it was considered a Royal Borough in the Domesday book of 1086 which also mentions its Market considered the second most valuable in Somerset. The 16th Century saw the towns popularity increase with travellers passing through the town to the Dorset Ports whereby many would frequent the number of Inns around the Market Square. The towns industry was centred around cloth making, webbing and making sails for the Navy. The Crewkerne and District Museum is in the High Street offering information on the development of the town and its heritage.
Attractions to visit in the town and surrounding areas would be The Henhayes Centre, 15th Century St. Bartholomew's Church, Bincombe Beeches nature trail for walks and scenic views of somerset. Outside the town are places such as The Wildlife Park, Montacute House, Barrington Court, Tintinhull Garden and Bridport Museum. There are a number of attractive shops, pubs and restaurants in Crewkerne itself for daytime activities and evening entertainment.
