Overview of Corby
The town of Corby is located North of Heathrow airport a distance of 90 miles that would take around 1 hour 45 minutes by taxi via the M1. It is situated in Northamptonshire and is 23 miles from the county town Northampton. It has a population of 55,800 according to 2010 statistics. Nearest towns are Peterborough, Wigston and Kettering. It was known by the name of Corbei in ancient times.
The town can be traced back to Saxon and Viking times and the custom known as The Corby Pole Fair is held every 20 years a feature left over from the Viking days. The town was granted a royal charter in 1568 by Elizabeth I one of the reasons being her rescue by Corby men when she fell from her horse in Rockingham Forest. During Roman occupation the town was an iron producing centre and with the establishment of the railway this production increase rapidly and was soon to put Corby on the map for a centre for employment. In 1980 the steelworks closed that lead to the redevelopment of many new businesses in the area.
Attractions to visit in and around the town are Deene Park a 16th Century Manor House and grounds, Kirby Hall an Elizabethan Mansion, Rockingham Motor Speedway, Rushton Triangular Lodge, Rothwell Heritage Centre and Alfred East Art Gallery.
