Overview of Cookham
The town of Cookham is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 17 miles the journey taking around 30 minutes by taxi via the M4. Nearest towns include Maidenhead, Burnham, Bourne End, Wooburn and Cookham Rise. The town has a population of 5,519 according to the 2001 Census and is situated in Berkshire on the River Thames. In the Domesday book it is referred to as Cocheham meaning 'Cook Village'.
The town can be traced back to prehistoric times as discovered when burial mounds at Cock Marsh were excavated with artefacts such as the Stone Axe being found. In the Middle Ages most of the of the town was owned by Cirencester Abbey. It is a popular tourist destination due to its access to walks along the Thames Path and for the Gallery of Sir Stanley Spencer celebrated artist that was born and lived in the town basing most of his work on Cookham and its inhabitants. There are a number of restaurants and Inns that add to the popularity of the town such as the Bel and the Dragon dating from 1417. The town is comprised of 3 areas, Cookham Rise in the centre for shopping and the railway, Cookham Dean a rural village with viewpoint of Winter Hill and Cookham Village with attractive high street.
