Overview of Coggeshall
The town of Coggeshall is located Northeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 85 miles that would take around 1 hour 30 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Essex and is between Colchester and Braintree. It has a population of 3,919 according to the 2001 Census. It dates back to an early Saxon settlement and is thought to have later been a Roman Station. The ramains of a Roman Villa were found along with Roman coins dating back to 31BC. It was mentioned in the Domesday book as Cogheshal.
The town was once home to a large monestary founded in 1140 by King Stephen and Queen Matilda which grew to an extensive estate with the farming of sheep and the production of wool and cloth. By the 16th Century the dissolution of the Monestaries saw an end to the prosperity of the Monks with the land and possessions being siezed and King Henry VIII granting them to Sir Thomas Seymour. Later the town grew more industrialised with the production of cloth, silk, velvet and the famous Coggeshall lace having been worn by both Queen Mary and Elizabeth II.
The town is known for its over 300 listed buildings, and ones to visit would be St. Nicholas Chapel, Paycockes House, Grange Barn, The Woolpack Inn and the Church dedicated to St.Peter Ad Vincula of the 15th Century. The town is full of historical interest, a well preserved example of an old english village with Inns, Hotels and restaurants.
Places to go in the surrounding areas would be Colchester Castle Museum, Bourne Mill, Abberton Reservoir Nature Reserve, Gosfield Lake Resort and Hedingham Castle.
