Overview of Chessington

The town of Chessington is located South of Heathrow Airport a distance of 27 miles taking around 30 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is a town in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames in Greater London. Nearest towns include Claygate, Oxshott, Epsom, Cobham, Esher and Leatherhead. It has a population of 19,433 as of 2007 statistics. The name came from the Anglo-Saxon Cissan Dun, meaning 'Hill belonging to a man called Cissa' the Hogsmill River runs through the town.

The town is popularly known as home to Chessington World of Adventures and the mansion known as Burnt Stub was built in 1348 and was involved in the English Civil war when Oliver Cromwells forces razed it to the ground. It was rebuilt by a wealthy family in the 18th Century and became a zoo in 1831, eventually becoming the theme park it is today.

There are other attractions in chessington including the Chessington Countryside Walk, Horton Park, Malden Miniature Railway, Hampton Court Palace, Garsons Farm and Kew Gardens.

Enid Blyton lived and taught in Chessington for five years, other notable residents include Helen Chamberlain, Petula Clark and Barry Chuckle from the Chuckle Brothers.
