Overview of Huddersfield
Huddersfield is a town within the Borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire and is 21 miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, the journey normally takes about 40 minutes in normal traffic conditions. Huddersfield has a population of 146,234 according to the 2001 census. It is known for its victorian architecture an example being Huddersfield Railway station a Grade 1 listed building once called 'a stately home with trains in'. Historically there have been Iron age, Roman and Saxon settlements in the area with artefacts found dating back to over 4000 years.
Town attractions include Galpharm Stadium, Titanic Spa, Huddersfield Sports Centre, Tolson Museum, Longley Old Hall, Greenhead Park, Victoria Tower on Castle Hill which on its summit you can see beautiful views over the countryside. It has the largest Canal tunnel in the country called Standedge which is a major tourist attraction. With the Peak District beginning to the south of the town, there are many small villages to explore amongst the countryside, notably Holmfirth where the TV programme 'Last of the Summer Wine' Was filmed.
For shopping the Market Hall has a general market where all sorts of items can be found. With Huddersfield University at the centre of the town there are many trendy high street shops, shopping arcades and centres such as the Kingsgate Shopping centre. There are plenty of coffee shops and bars to choose from and restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. For nightlife the club scene is full of choices with places offering many different types of music.
