Overview of Hertford

The town of Hertford is located Southwest of Stansted Airport a distance of around 23miles a journey that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the A120. It is located in Hertfordshire and has a population of 24,180 according to the 2001 Census.

The towns name is Anglo Saxon in origin and means the ford frequented by harts or stags. The Normans made it into a fortified Burgh and began work of Hertford Castle which was later built in stone by King Henry II. Famously Hertford was the place where the last person in the UK was tried for Witchcraft and in 1563, the Parliament of England met at the castle because of an outbreak of plague in London. The castle was used regularly by royalty and Queen Isabella died there in 1358. It grew and prospered as a Market town and benefitted by the arrival of the Railway in 1843.

The town is an interesting place for visitors and being a commuter town has good connections into Central London. The town has retained its historic character due to the small number of chain stores and there are many landmarks and buildings of architectural interest. Some attractions available to visitors include Hertford Castle, The Hertford Corn Exchange, Hertford Museum and the neighbouring towns of Harlow, Bishops Stortford and Stevenage.
