Overview of Hatfield

The town of Hatfield is located West of Stansted Airport a distance of around 32 miles a journey that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the B1256, A120 and A414. It is located in Hertfordshire and has a population of 29,616 according to the 2001 Census.

The name is derived from Hetfelle the name given to the settlement in Saxon times. The town grew up around the famous Hatfield House which is the seat of the Cecil family and was the place where Elizabeth Tudor was confined before she became Queen following the death of Queen Mary I. The town still retains some historic buildings such as the Old Palace which was built by the Bishop of Ely and St Etheldredas Church which was founded by the Monks of Ely. The town is also remembered in connection with the Aerospace Industry with de Havilland airfield and aircraft factory being opened in 1930. It became a major employer in the town and produced a number of jet aircraft during the Second World War.

There are a number of places of interest in Hatfield including Mill Green Museum and Watermill, The Galleria and Hatfield House. It is located in close proximity to the neighbouring towns of Potters Bar, St Albans and Stevenage.
