Overview of Gillingham

The town of Gillingham is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 46 miles that would take around 54 minutes by taxi via the M25, M26 and M20. It is situated in the ceremonial county of Kent and has a population of 99,773 according to the 2001 Census.

The name means 'Homestead of Gylla's family' and according to history it was named after a war lord called Gyllingas, a notable man who lead his men into battle screaming and shouting. It began as a small Hamlet that centred around a Parish church with farm holdings. Its past includes much involvment in defences of the Royal Navy, with Fort Darland a post medieval infantry Fort built in 1870-1900 that was part of the defences network of Chatham Dockyard. It was the birthplace of the Elizabethan seafarer William Adams who founded the first Japanese Navy.

The town is the most important centre for retail in the area and has a market twice a week and is the busiest in the whole of the Medway. Gillingham is home to the Royal Engineers Museum one of the most important for military engineering history and provides information from 1066 to the present day. A day out at the Riverside Country Park is an ideal place for nature lovers and walkers with areas of Saltmarsh, meadow and woodlands to explore.
