Overview of Fareham

The town of Fareham is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 68 miles that would take around 1 hour 20 minutes by taxi via the M23, A264 and A27. It is situated in Hampshire between the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth and has a population of 56,160 according to the 2001 Census. Its name is derived from Ferne Ham which means village by the ferns.

Being situated on the Solent Coast at the north-west tip of Portsmouth Harbour Fareham has a vast Maritime Heritage. In its past it served the Royal Navy and presented Lord Admiral Nelson with a 110ft tribute in 1807. It was a busy market town during the 12th century and manufactured Chimney Pots and Bricks called 'Fareham Reds' popular in the Victorian Era. It was also a town famed for its Strawberry production and Swanwick railway line was built to transport fresh produce such as these into London.

The town has a wide range of visitor attractions, for sights with a historical theme try Portchester Castle, Titchfield Abbey, Westbury Manor Museum and Fort Nelson. The town is surrounded by the Forest of Bere, the River Hamble and Swanwick Lakes Wildlife Reserve. Today it is regarded as a desirable place to live with its friendly atmosphere, 18th century buildings, local Restaurants and amenities such as a cinema, theatre and pubs.
