An overview of Doncaster
Doncaster is a large town in South Yorkshire. According to the census taken in 2001 the town has a population of 67,977 residents. Doncaster has its own International airport which serves as a hub for Thomson Airways.
It is situated 29 miles South West of Scunthorpe, 18 miles North of Worsop, 22 miles South East of Sheffield and 17 miles East of Barnsley.
Doncaster is located at the site of a Roman fort that was built during the first century at a crossing on the river Don. The borough rapidly expanded due to coal mining but then fell into economic difficulties during the 1970 s to the 1980 s when a lot of the coal mines were closed. Doncaster now has the 15th largest population in the UK.
Doncaster is situated in a fantastic position on the M18 and subsequently has excellent links to the M1 and M62. It is also an important rail town serving the East coast mainline.
