Derby is situated 42 miles north of Birmingham airport, this journey normally takes an hour.The M1 motorway passes about ten miles to the east of the city, linking Derby southwards to the London area and northwards to Sheffield and Leeds.The A38 links to Bodmin in the south via Bristola and Birmingham and Mansfield to the north. The A50 links to Warrington and Leicester via Stoke-on-Trent, and the A52 goes to Newcastle-under-Lyme. These systerms make it very easy to travel almost anywhere in the country from Derby.
In the Dearby area there are approximately 229,407 residents. It has a long history incorporating Roman, Saxon and Viking habitations. During the Industrail Revolution Derby was a center of trade for silk and cotton milling. In 1777 The first water powered cotton spinning mill in the UK was opened by Richard Arkwright and associates. The Derby Industrail Museam, located by the old silk mill, tells the story of Derby's industrail heritage, including a look at Rolls-Royce, the railways, mining, milling and the local foundries.
Derby received its city ststus in June 1977, as a part of the celebrations for the Queen's 25th Anniversary of her ascention to the throne. It is also a cultural center for the deaf community in the UK, owing to the large population of sign language users in the city.
Derby has many attractions including; Pride Park- Derby County's football ground, Derby Gaol- where you can take a tour of the dungeons dating back to 1756, or visit the Derby Arboeretum- which is accredited with being the inspiration for Central Park in New York.
