Overview of Daventry
The town of Daventry is located Northwest of Stansted airport a distance of 98 miles that would take around 1 hour 45 minutes by taxi via the M11, M25 and M1. It is located in Northamptonshire and has a population of 25,026 according to the 2011 Census.
The history of Daventry can be traced back to the Iron Age and the ramains of one of the largest hill forts in Britain was found at Borough Hill that overlooks the town. The name is derived from 'Daintree' where Danish settlers planted an oak tree on Borough Hill to mark the centre of England. The town began as an Anglo-Saxon village in 920AD and by 1255 had been granted a charter to be a market town. For centuries the town flourished as a coaching town, and was situated on the London to Holyhead Road. Some of the old coaching inns still exist such as The Dun Cow, The Saracens Head and The Coach and Horses.
Daventry is an enjoyable place to visit, surrounded by countryside visitors can enjoy a number of outdoor persuits with many parks and gardens available such as Coton Manor Gardens, Borough Hill, Daventry Country Park or Brixworth Country Park. There are many elegant country houses to visit such as Althorp, Canons Ashby, Lamport Hall & Gardens and Kelmarsh Hall & Gardens.
