Overview of Crewe
Crewe is a town situated in Cheshire. It is located 29.2 miles south of Manchester Airport; this journey will take about 40 minutes to travel by car in normal traffic conditions using the M6 and the M56. Crewe is the largest town in the borough of Crewe and Nantwich. It has a population of 67,683 residents according to the census taken in 2001. Crewe has been twinned with Macon in France and Bischofsheim, in Germany.
Crewe is most commonly known for being a large railway link between major rail works. It is one of the leading stations in the North-West of England, it contains 12 platforms and provides a direct service to London Euston, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Stoke-on-Trent, Chester and, of course many other destinations. Crewe had a very minute population of just 70 residents before plans were exchanged to build the railway station in the 1830 s. The Grand Junction Railway company was responsible for choosing the site and it was completed in 1837 in the fields nearby Crewe Hall. Crewe railway station is located under a mile from the centre of Crewe.
Crewe was home to the Rolls-Royce motor car production from 1946-2002 and is now the exclusive producer of Bentley motor cars in the Pyms Lane factory. Crewe also has a large park called Queen s park which was laid out by the engineer Francis Webb the land for this was originally donated by the London and North Western Railway. One of the significant attractions in Crewe is the Railway Age railway museum. The museum has a preserved Advanced Passenger Train; this can be seen from the main station.
