Overview of Chelsea

The town of Chelsea is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 42 miles that would take an hour by taxi via the M11. It is located in central London in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea it has a population of 158,300 according to 2011 statistics.

The name Chelsea is derived from the Saxon words cealc hythe, cealc meant chalk and hythe a landing place for boats. It developed from a small village but from the 16th century it had become a fashionable place to live for the wealthy and was once described as "a village of palaces". In 1536 Henry VIII had built a manor house there and two of his wives, Catherine Parr and Anne of Cleves had lived there. Chelsea is known for Chelsea buns, Chelsea China ware that was made at the Chelsea porcelain factory and the Chelsea Royal Hospital that was set up by Charles II and opened in 1694.

Chelsea was once famous as a bohemian area that attracted artists, poets, writers and painters. This came from the victorian times when famous painters such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, J. M. W Turner and John Singer Sargent had lived and worked there. Some major attractions in the area include The Chelsea Collection, the Chelsea Flower Show, the National Army Museum and the Kings Road which has a wide range of high street and specialised shops.
