An overview of Carlisle
Carlisle is a city in Cumbria in the north west of England located 10 miles south of the Scottish boarder. It is situated at the confluence or the rivers, Eden, Cadew and Petteril.
Carlisle is the largest settlement in the county of Cumbria. According to the census in 2001 it has a population of 71,773 residents.
The city is connected to the rest of England via the M6 motorway towards the South, and to Scotland via the M74/A74 towards Glasgow and the North. Carlisle is an important centre for trade branching out to Scotland, Newcastle, Lancaster and many other areas.
History
Carlisle is marked by its status of Roman settlement; it was originally established to serve forts on Hadrian s Wall. During the Middle Ages Carlisle became an important military stronghold. This was due to its proximity to the Kingdom of Scotland.
Carlisle castle was built in 1092 by William Rufus and once served as a prison for Mary queen of Scots. Although the castle was built many years ago it is still standing reasonably undamaged. It now houses the Border Regiment Museum.
In early 12th century Henry I permitted the foundation of a priory in Carlisle. The town then gained diocese status in 1122 and the priory became Carlisle Cathedral.
During the industrial revolution Carlisle began to produce textiles later developing itself into a mill town. After this it went on to become a railway town with 7 companies sharing Carlisle s railway station.
Tourism
The Tullie House Museum is an award-winning museum. It tells the story of the Border country, including much material on Hadrian's Wall, the Roman defensive structure the course of which runs through the Stanwix area of the city, and many items of Roman architecture. Carlisle Cathedral has the largest east window of any cathedral in Europe, but the western end of the cathedral was demolished by Oliver Cromwell to shore up the castle. Carlisle also has a first-class racetrack, located to the south of the city centre.
