Overview of Canterbury
The town of Canterbury is located Southeast of Stansted airport a distance of 81 miles that would take around 1 hour 30 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M2. It is located in Kent on the River Stour and has a population of 43,431 according to the 2001 Census.
The history of Canterbury can be traced back to prehistoric times with Lower Paleolithic axes, neolithic and bronze age pots being found in the area. The Romans had named it Durovernum Cantiacorum during their occupation and had rebuilt much of the city left by the Celtic tribe called the Cantiaci. After the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170 Canterbury attracted many pilgrims from all over Europe to come and visit his shrine. There are many traces of the citys history throughout the town including the remains of the original Roman Defences, Medieval Walls, West Gate and Norman Castle.
Some of the most well known attractions on offer to visitors include Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury Heritage Museum, Canterbury Norman Castle, Canterbury Roman Museum, Dane John Gardens, Druidstone Park and Elham Valley Vineyard. There are many tours available to take in the sites and historic landmarks with guided walking tours, River boat tours for day and evening, Ghost tours and Audio tours.
