Brighton is a town in the city of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex. According to the census completed in 2001 Brighton has a total population of 155,919 residents.Brighton is well known for its nightlife and has been named one of the UK s hotspots, it has over 300 pubs in the town.

Brighton is located 26.5 miles West of Eastbourne, 14.4 miles East of Worthing and 14.8 miles South of Haywards Heath.

History

Brighton is referred to in the 1086 Doomsday book as an ancient settlement it was named brighthelmston. During the 18th century the town emerged as a health resort. Once the railway had arrived in 1841 the town saw a huge increase in tourism with many visitors taking day trips to the area. Brighton experienced rapid population growth during the 20th century with the total population reaching 160,000 residents by 1961. Brighton now has an excess of over 8 million tourists per year.

In 1997 Brighton and Hove were joined to form a unitary authority of Brighton & Hove. It was granted city status by Queen Elizabeth 2nd as part of the millennium celebrations.

Places of interest in Brighton are the Royal Pavilion which was a former palace built in the early 1800 s as Prince Regents home, and Brighton Pier which opened in 1899 this features a fun fair, restaurants and arcades. Brighton also hosts to big festivals annually which are the Brighton Fringe festival and the Brighton festival, the largest arts festival in the UK after Edinburgh.
