The town of Bournemouth is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 116 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M25, M3 and A338. It is a coastal town in Dorset and has a population of 163,444 according to the 2001 Census. Located on the South Coast of England it is a popular holiday resort with people staying in Bournemouth and the joining towns of Poole or Christchurch. The history of the town begins after a long period of uninhabitance when the area existed as heathland and in Tudor times a hunting estate.The first resident was Lewis Tregonwell who in 1812 came to live in the town and began to establish holiday sea villas with land owner Sir George Ivison Tapps planting hundreds of Pine trees making a sheltered walk to the beach known as Invalids Walk. This began the expansion of the town into a holiday centre with people wanting to escape the busy life of the city for fresh air and the seaside.
Today the town can offer a wide range of activities such as watersports, surfing, cycling , golf, walks along the piers of Bournemouth and Boscombe and the towns very own victorian Gardens. Visit the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth International Centre and Pavillion Theatre. Go shopping in the town centre with its range of high street shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels. For family entertainment there is the Littledown centre and Paultons Family Theme Park.
