Overview of Birmingham

The city of Birmingham is located North West of Stansted airport a distance of 126 miles that would take around 2 hours 15 minutes by taxi via the M11 and M6. It is situated in the West Midlands of England and has a population of 1,074,300 according to 2011 statistics.

The history of Birmingham can be traced back to 10,500 years ago during Stone Age times, and artefacts have been found that suggest hunting and woodland activities such as tree felling. The Romans made a fort near Harborne and created a network of Roads that cross the area. It was first made into a settlement by the Anglo-Saxons and this was located close to the River Rea in Digbeth, they named it after the Saxon Chief or nobleman 'Beorma'. A large selection of artefacts made from gold and silver were found in 2009 thought to be the most valuable treasure hoard ever discovered in the UK that date back to the 7th Century Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and are famously known as the Staffordshire Hoard. The city began as an urban and commercial centre in 1166 when the Lord of the Manor Peter de Birmingham was granted a charter for the market, and later in the 16th century followed the metal working industries due to the large amount of iron ore and coal available in the area.

There are many cultural and leisure activities on offer in Birmingham, it had a worldwide reputation as a powerhouse of manufacturing and invention and was called 'City of a Thousand Trades' and the Pen Room Museum exhibits original machinery and collections describing these times. Other famous attractions include Motor Heritage Centre, Cadbury World, ThinkTank Birmingham Science Museum, the Custard Factory, Sutton Park, The Winterbourne Botanic Garden and the O2 Academy Birmingham.
