Overview of Billericay

The town of Billericay is located Southeast of Stansted airport a distance of 35 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the B181 and A12. It is situated in the Basildon borough of Essex and has a population of 60,000 according to the 2001 census.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Bronze and Iron Ages with burial mounds being found at Norsey Woods. The towns name was first recorded as 'Byllyrica' in 1291 and is believed to be from the Latin 'bellerica' meaning dyehouse or tanhouse. During the Middle Ages Pilgrims passed through the town on their way to Canterbury and on June 28th 1381 the famous battle took place at Norsey Wood which led to the end of the Peasants Revolt. A meeting of the Pilgrim Fathers prior to their sailing in the Mayflower is said to have taken place in Billericay, and many local names and much historical imagery reflect this: Mayflower House, Morris Men, Taxis, School, Hall.

The town has alot to offer visitors and residents being only 30-40 minutes from central London. It has a busy High Street with a wide range of shops, chain stores and supermarkets and there are many parks and open spaces such as Norsey Wood, Mill Meadows Nature Reserve, Queen's Park Country Park, Sun Corner, Lake Meadows, Hanningfield Reservoir and South Green. Notable people who have lived in the town include Steve Davis, Alison Moyet and Lee Evans.
