Overview of Belper

The town of Belper is located Northwest of Stansted airport at a distance of 145 miles that would take around 2 hours 40 minutes by taxi via the M11 and A14. It is located in Amber Valley in Derbyshire and has a population of 20,548 according to 2001 statistics.

The towns name is throught to be derived from Beaurepaire meaning 'beautiful retreat' which was the name of a hunting lodge as recorded in a charter of 1231. By the 13th Century the town had grown to a substantial size and iron-workings was a major source of income and nail making a local industry with over 500 workshops in the town by the 18th century. Belper was one of the first mill towns and many new mills were built and used to manufacture textiles. Today the town is characterised by its traditional village feel with some of the nail makers houses featuring in local tours of the town, set in the heart of Derbyshire in the Amber Valley it is located in beautiful countryside of green fields and dense woodlands.

There are many attractions on offer to tourists such as the Midland Railway Centre, National Tramway Museum, Wingfield Manor-which was the setting for the famous Babington plot, Kedleston Hall and the Derwent Valley Visitor Centre. The town is linked with a number of famous figures such as Florence Nightingale, Samuel Slater-father of the American Industrial Revolution and Timothy Dalton who was the fourth James Bond.
