Overview of Bellshill
The name Bellshill first appears in the Pont map of 1654 as "Belmill". Originally the village of Bellshill was formed by a row of quarry workers houses situated at the east end of Viewpark. These houses belonged to a Mr Bell who also owned the stone quarry in the south of the village. This original village ceased to exist after the demise of the quarry but the neighbouring village of Crossgates became a point of interest for the area.
Around 1810 the village took the name Bellshill and expanded to merge with the surrounding villages of Black Moss and Sykehead. Crossgates is situated at what is now called Bellshill Cross. Situated 9 miles southeast of Glasgow on the road between Glasgow and Edinburgh, the town's main industry was agriculture though it also had a small weaving industry, 4 clay tile works and a pickle factory. In the middle of the 1800's its resources of coal and iron were developed making way for shops and first class homes to appear in the town by 1875. The first pit in the area was Thankerton colliery with operations at Carnbroe and other sites. Having a railway at Mossend helped in the development of Bellshill and then later a more local station at Fallside and Bellshill Cross.
At around 1870 Bellshill village had a hospital with two wards which dealt with infectious diseases during World War 1. Later it became Lanarkshire's first Maternity Hospital in 1917 and this role increased further in 1962 when a new maternity building was officially opened by HRH Queen Elizabeth.
