Overview of Basingstoke

The town of Basingstoke is located Southwest of Stansted airport at a distance of 100miles that would take around 1 hour 45 minutes by taxi via the M11, M25 and M3. It is located in northeast Hampshire and has a population of 83,662 according to 2011 statistics.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Iron Age with Winklebury Camp located near to the town centre being an iron age hillfort and several other earthworks including a long barrow near Down Grange. In 43AD the Romans had conquered North Hampshire and had established a road that ran from Winchester to Silchester. In the Domesday book its name was recorded as Basingestoches and the western settlement of Basa's people and the Saxon tribe of the Basinga's. During the Civil War, and the siege of Basing House between 1643 and 1645, the town played host to large numbers of Parliamentarians and St Michaels Church was used as an badly damaged whilst being used as an explosive store. With the arrival of the Railway the town began to move into industrial manufacture.
