Overview of Amersham

Amersham is situated in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, 21 miles north of Heathrow airport. This journey normally takes about half an hour in normal traffic conditions. It has a population of 17719 according to the Amersham Parish 2001 census. It is just under an hour away from the centre of London and neighbouring towns are Little Chalfont, Chorleywood and Chesham. The town is split into two, Amersham Old Town and modernly developed Amersham on the Hill. The old town is largely unchanged since the 17th and 18th century and there are rows of houses from various periods well preserved with the ancient market hall in the centre. There are many fine buildings designed in Amersham on the Hill, some by architect John Kennard in the 1900s unique designs have made the town far from ordinary. There are tourist walking routes for the Old Town that enable visitors to see the main places of interest such as Martyrs monument, St Mary's Church, Market Square and Market Hall, High Street (North and South side) Amersham Museum, other historical buildings and The Broadway. There are many intriguing stories of ghosts and mysteries to learn about from Amershams colourful past in the pubs and in the museum.

There are a number of events in the town such as Amersham Carnival, Amersham Fete, country and Farmers Markets. There is a shopping centre with useful shops in the town and several restaurants and pubs to choose from. For leisure there is Chiltern pools, the Indoor Climbing Centre and Chesham Leisure centre all in close proximity.
