Overview of Aldershot

The town of Aldershot is located Southwest of Stansted airport at a distance of 90 miles that would take around 1 hour 30 minutes by taxi via the M11 and M25. It is situated in the county of Hampshire and has a population of 33,840 according to 2008 statistics.

The name of the town may have come into use due to the 'Alder' Trees found in the area, and it dates back to an Anglo-Saxon settlement. It was known as a dangerous area for travellers due to the vastness of the land with remote and lonely areas, and there were many incidents of stagecoach robberies with highwaymen such as Dick Turpin. An army base was developed in 1854 which led to an increase in the population and the village gradually turned into a small town with regular visits from Queen Victoria. Today the town is known as 'The Home of the British Army' and is a garrison town that serves as the location for the military presence in the area.

The town centre has alot on offer for visitors including shops, pubs, leisure facilities and shopping centres. Some popular attractions include Brickfields country Park-a peaceful 9-acre natural park with a lovely lake and walks, Aldershot Military Museum, sports facilities such as a tennis centre, bowling alley, swimming pools and lido, a leisure centre and the Alpine Snow Sports Centre. Some landmarks of the town include Aldershot Observatory, the Military Cemetery, the Royal Garrison Church and a statue of the first Duke of Wellington.
