Overview of Aboyne

The town of Aboyne is located North of Bristol airport a distance of 507 miles that would take around 1 day by taxi via the M5, M6 and M90. The town is officially called Charlestown of Aboyne after the 1st Earl of Aboyne and before that it was known as Bonty.

Founded in 1671 by the Earl of Aboyne and having been modelled by one of the first Marquesses of Huntly the town has the appearance of a traditional English village with a green in the centre. Nearby is Aboyne Castle built in the 17th Century and now restored as a private residence and the Loch of Aboyne. Well equipt for tourists, Aboyne has alot to offer with sporting activities and interesting places to see. The town engages in its 'Highland Games' every September and has done so since 1867 and the Aboyne and Deeside Festival every summer. Visitors can enjoy Golf, Tennis, bowling on the green, Gliding and walking in the nearby Cairngorms National Park. The area is particulary good for gliding due to the air stream arising from the surrounding terrain of the Grampian Mountains. From cycling in Glen Tanar Forest with its beautiful wildlife and rushing streams to Mounting climbing at Mount Keen or Ballater it would be hard to be stuck for things to do.

The town comprises of Hotels, Shops, Supermarket, restaurants and cafes to sit and watch the world go by. It has a school and an Academy with over 650 students. Some of the smaller villages in the surrounding area and worth visiting for their historical interest and unspoilt beauty include Torphins, Finzean, Kincardine, Lumphanan, Birse and Tarland.
